Ask Not What Your Employer Can Do For You

…but what you can do for your employer! We have all heard President Kennedy’s most famous speech and you know it’s about our country not employer. However, let’s consider this for now. What if every CEO across the world said this; Ask not what your employer can do for you, but what you can do for your employer.

What would happen? Honestly, I do not know! But, I do know that regardless if it is asked or not, it’s something we should be challenging ourselves with.

Whether you are in transition or currently employed, ask what you can do for your employer! For example, a great question to ask a hiring manager in ANY interview is, “How can I get you promoted?”

I wrote this article because of a client I had recently who was obsessed with their salary and benefits when considering job opportunities. Their job offer came with an increase in salary and great benefits, but they wanted MORE! The problem here is that she was thinking about it all the wrong way. The point is that it’s not about how much money we can squeeze out of our employer, but instead our focus should be on, “What can I do for my employer to help them grow and in turn help me grow.” This person was focused on the short-term goals and not seeing the long-term vision. By changing their mindset to, “what can I do for my employer” they were able to see how much they were going to grow in their career and the endless possibilities they were going to have.

What we can take from this example is what you should focus on in your next interview. You need to tell the employer, here is what I can do for you! Now of course, you can just come out and say it straight forth or you can build your case.

What you can do for an employer is based off your experiences and Here is how we can help you!
